Jerry Bruckheimer and Johnny Depp are swimming in cash after the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, and two flicks have already been setup concerning the recent hijackings off the coast of Africa by Somali pirates. So with the Caribbean and the African coast already covered what setting could possibly make for an original pirate film? Outer space, of course.
Mike Fleming reports on his Variety blog that Warner Bros. has set Michael and Peter Spierig to direct and John Brownlow to write an updated version of “Captain Blood,” the 1935 pirate classic that featured Errol Flynn as a wrongly imprisoned British doctor who escapes to become a pirate in the Caribbean. Only they’ll replace the warm waters of the Caribbean with the cold darkness of outer space.
Producer Bill Gerber said that despite the unusual setting, the film will be relatively faithful to the original film’s plot.
“There are some things you don’t mess with, and that is as classic a movie storyline as you will ever find,” Gerber said.
The Spierig brothers are best known for their films, “Undead,” and “Daybreakers.”
