Excitement has reached a fever pitch in some circles with talented director Michel Gondry (“The Science of Sleep,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”) and prominent funnyman Seth Rogen both on Board to make a “Green Hornet” feature film.
But it appears that the role of the Hornet’s trusty driver and Martial Arts expert sidekick, Kato, has yet to be filled. Here is the casting call discovered by Spoiler TV:
[KATO] ALL ASIAN ETHNICITIES, Male, 20’s – early 40’s. Brit Reid’s manservant/chauffeur by day and Green Hornet’s martial arts-skilled sidekick by night. Actor doesn’t have to have Martial Arts experience.
Pretty interesting if you wanted to break this thing down and analyze it line by line. Strange ambivalence about ethnicity, huge age range, and indifference to fairly essential Martial Arts skills makes the filmmakers’ approach seem a little disjointed and broad. Unless, of course, this is precisely what they’re going for and this version of the Green Hornet will abandon all the hallmarks of its source material. Who knows.
