Reboot is the new remake. It seems Hollywood is finally owning up to its sins and making contrition for all the refuse they’ve created over the years by redoing entire franchises, sometimes immediately after the release of the originals–think, “The Hulk” or “Fantastic Four.” That’s fine when they’re fixing movies that needed to be fixed, but a line in the sand has just been drawn–and unfortunately crossed– when Columbia Pictures recently announced that reboot was in the works for comedy classic “Ghostbusters.”
Harold Ramis, who co-wrote and starred in the first two films as the uptight brainiac Egon calmed, if not vanquished fears in an interview by assuring us that the original cast will remain intact for a third film including Dan Akroyd and Bill Murray. “We’re all going to be in it in different kinds of roles,” Ramis said. “We’re going to be the sage mentors. There are going to be young Ghostbusters.”
You can imagine that kind of reaction there has been to the thought of “young Ghostbuster.” How could anyone possibly fill the shoes of comedy legends Bill Murray and Dan Akroyd? Well, it just happens that Judd Apatow has signed on to produce sparking rumors that the likes of Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, and Jason Segel might be tapped to play the next generation of Ghostbusters. But, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. There’s apparently not even a script yet, though it is in the works with “The Office” writers, Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky writing the first draft.
When the subject of Rogen starring in the film came up Ramis recalled, “Someone asked Seth, and he said, ‘What?’ He said, ‘That’d have to be one great fucking script for anyone to touch that.’ He’s right about that.”
