62nd Cannes Film Festival - Luc Besson PartyA Paris appeals court fined French filmmaker Luc Besson’s movie company, Europacorp, 100,000 euros ($140,580) on Monday for the death of Alain Dutartre, a 41-year-old cameraman, who was hit by a car during a 1999 stunt shoot on the film, “Taxi 2,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The court also decreed a  six-month suspended prison sentence for stunt director Remy Julienne, 79.

A lower court had originally acquitted Besson’s company of wrongdoing and given Julienne an 18-month suspended sentence.

But the appeals court convicted Europacorp of manslaughter and fined it 100,000 euros ($140,580).  The company and Julienne were also ordered to jointly pay 20,000 euros to each of the cameraman’s parents and 10,000 euros each to his two brothers.

Besson, who directed “The Fifth Element,” “La Femme Nikita,” and “Australia,” produced the film.

No information was released on whether Julienne or Europacorp would appeal the ruling.
