Seven-time Tour de France champion, Lance Armstrong, will be immortalized on the big screen with a biopic dedicated to his life story, according to the Risky Business Blog.
Producer Frank Marshall says the Columbia-backed project has brought on Gary Ross to pen the script, a writer very familiar with sports comeback stories. Executives are hopeful that shooting will begin early next year.
Ross, who wrote and directed the Oscar nominated, horse-racing comeback tale, “Seabiscuit,” has been hired to adapt Armstrong’s first book “It’s Not About the Bike,” published in 2000, which chronicles the story of his difficult Texas childhood, his battle with cancer in 1996, his family life, and his impossible comeback to win the Tour de France for the first time in 1999.
“We knew Gary well from his work on ‘Seabiscuit’ and thought he’d be perfect for this,” said Marshall, with Kathleen Kennedy, also produced the Depression-era tale.
Marshall and Kennedy are producing the pic through their Kennedy/Marshall banner, and Marhsall may even direct the pic himself.
Matt Damon is reportedly the frontrunner to play Armstrong, though no official on casting has been made.
