According to Variety, the auteur’s next feature will be a disaster movie with psychological and dramatic elements titled, “Melancholia.”

The title is shorthand for Planet Melancholia, a giant planet hovering ominously over the earth. Zentropa Entertainment co-founder Peter Aalbaek Jensen was tight-lipped about the plot but did reveal that film will not be an alien invasion flick.

When asked about the film, which Trier will direct from his own script, he said, “No more happy endings!” And coming from Trier, you better believe it.

And with a meager budget of only $7 million, it’s hard to imagine a large-scale disaster movie in the vein of “Independence Day” or “The Day After Tomorrow.”

“As a disaster movie, ‘Melancholia’ will use some special effects, but nothing compared to Hollywood,” Aalbaek said.

Casting is currently underway and the project is scheduled to begin production in Europe sometime in 2010.

IFC, the film’s largest buyer at the Cannes Film Festival, snatched up the surreal, psycho-erotic horror thriller starring Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Dafoe during the festival.

The film caused quite a ruckus at Cannes with most of those who saw either falling in love with it or outright rebuking it. It was reportedly even met with boos in the screening room.

Meta Louise Foldager produced and Peter Aalbaek Jensen and Peter Garde executive produced “Antichrist,” which won the jury’s actress award for Gainsbourg’s performance.

IFC plans to broaden its theatrical release following its initial launch in the country’s metro areas. “Antichrist” is also scheduled for a video-on-demand release on Oct. 21.
