Legendary, award-winning comedy writer, Larry Gelbart, best known for developing the iconic TV comedy series, MASH, co-authoring the book for the hit Broadway musical “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” and co-writing the classic film comedy, “Tootsie,” died today. He was 81.
Gelbart died at his home in Beverly Hills with his wife, Pat, at his side after being diagnosed with cancer in June.
Here are some highlights from the funnyman’s amazing career:
-Discovered by Sid Caesar (along with Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Neil Simon and Woody Allen).
-Co-wrote “Tootsie,” one of the greatest comedies of all time. And by all accounts, Gelbarts contributions played the largest role in shaping it into the film we know and love today.
-Responsible for adapting the classic film, “M*A*S*H,” into the equally iconic hit TV show.
-Co-authored the book for the Tony-winning musical “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” He also wrote the acclaimed plays, “Mastergate” and “City of Angels.”
-Wrote several hilarious films for HBO, including “Barbarians at the Gate” and “Weapons of Mass Distraction.”
