2009 CineVegas Film Festival - Portraits - Day 3The Christian belief that Jesus Christ was a god who descended upon earth to die for the sins of the world hasn’t typically been associated with the anti-establishment, ironic t-shirt-wearing hipster movement — until now.

Universal is coming off of last year’s $600 million global success, the Abba musical “Mamma Mia!” and according to the Risky Biz Blog is looking to remake “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic Broadway musical that was adapted for the screen in 1973 by revered director, Norman Jewison (“In the Heat of the Night,” “Fiddler on the Roof”).

So where does the hipster factor come from?  Reportedly, producer Marc Platt and his studio friends are eyeing director Marc Webb to helm the religious musical remake.

Webb is currently enjoying critical success for his breakout effort, the hipster breakup flick, “(500) Days of Summer,” that stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel (as Summer).

Although Webb probably isn’t the first guy that comes to mind for a project like this, there are some subversive and controversial elements in “Superstar” that may play right into the director’s hands.

Upon its release, Jewison’s screen version of the musical was bombarded with both praise and outright scorn for its controversial portrayal of Jesus and particularly the disciple who betrayed him, Judas Iscariot.
