Smith’s ‘The Flock’ Picked Up for Film Adaptation

Jul 13th, 2009

James Robert Smith’s novel, “The Flock,” has been optioned by Producers Don Murphy and John Wells.

Murphy will produce with Angryfilms partner Susan Montford, and Wells will produce with his company’s president, Claire Polstein, according the THR.

The book centers on a group of super-intelligent, giant, prehistoric birds discovered in the Florida Everglades who try to protect their ancient home when faced with encroachment by theme park developers.

The story of how Murphy came across the book is rather interesting.  Smith was posting comments on Eddie Campbell’s(the artist of “From Hell,” whose film adaptation was produced by Murphy) critical of the film, putting Murphy on the defensive. Eager to find out more about the poster, Murphy discovered Smith had written a book. He soon ordered it, expecting to hate it but to his surprise, he loved it.

The producers, who are now looking for writers, see the project as a summer tentpole film.
